Pen and Wash – Select the right Drawing Pen

What type of the lines do I wish to produce in your next pen and wash? Could it be a technical pen who makes specific line width? Or could it be a bamboo pen that provides many different lines when you swirl the pen inside your fingers? Ink lines express all the emotion and elegance because the watercolor wash. How about we look at a few forms of drawing pens to get you on on your path.

Technical pens

Technical pens are fantastic for artist pens. They create a uniform type of thickness which comes in several nib sizes. These range between fine lines, like the 005, good for hatching and stippling, to thick lines, like the 08. Technical pens are available in an array of colors, too. Read the labels; not all are water-proof.

Ballpoint, Roller ball and Gel ink pens

Ballpoint pens are suitable for writing, but are a great choice when you want to work with something apart from a technical pen. These are accessible for quick drawing and sketching and come in an array of colors. They generally are available in 3 sizes; extra-fine, fine and wide. Most are water-soluble so may be diffused inside your pen and wash to create beautiful effects.

I love roller ball and gel pens. They have each side technical pens as the ink doesn’t shine like ballpoint pens. Roller ball and gel pens are certainly not permanent and will diffuse with your washes.

Dip pens and fountain pens

Dip pen and fountain pens enter in to two parts, the holder, or handle, and the nib. The holder may be fitted using a wide variety of nib sizes for any wide range of marks. Dip pens works on the dip pen ink bottle. Fountain pens also uses bottled fountain pen ink to refill their reservoir but in addition uses pen ink refills. Check out the many different nibs to get their flexibility and behavior.

Bamboo and Reed pens

Bamboo and reed can make a wide range of marks. Reeds are more flexible than bamboo and can produce sensitive marks and will soften after much use to create broader line, so handle all of them with the light touch.

Bamboo is a bit more solid which enable it to create firm lines and also different widths of marks. You’ll find these inside your local art supply store you can also build your own.

Quill Pens

Quill pens make their own distinctive lines; they are an easy task to control and inexpensive. You should buy them or build your own from your selection of feathers, like turkey, geese or swan. Do not be used up to a nearby farm or pond and take off a feather from our feathery friends. A quill pen has to dry for most months before they are stiff enough for virtually any drawing purposes. Your neighborhood art supply store must have an excellent stock taking place.

Fiber tipped pens

Fiber-tipped pens are available in countless nib style, sizes and colors for either lines or filling out areas. You can spend an entire day tinkering with these. One can choose from regular colors, skin tones, glitter, neon and fluorescent!

All others

Sticks, slivers of cardboard, string, a small tree branch, popsicle sticks, cotton swabs, anything that may be dipped into ink, can make exciting lines or marks. Some are around your home right this moment while others won’t cost you something to make. Enjoy.

Pen and wash is surely an expressive art form and drawing using a pen of your choice can make your experience in addition. Enjoy.
