Legionella bacterias is microscopic and can be found in streams, rivers, reservoirs and wetlands, usually in minimal numbers, where they don’t cause any problems. The difficulty comes in the event that these tiny microorganisms get trapped with your water system and multiply, potentially leading to Legionnaires’ Disease.
According to the Government, there were 503 cases of Legionnaires’ Disease in the UK in 2019. It’s a serious illness which can be fatal – symptoms to be familiar with include fever, headaches, cough and difficulty breathing.
While legionella bacteria might cause problems anywhere because of the right conditions, a few areas such as areas where water is actually stored or recirculated, where the water temperature is involving 20-45°C or where oxidation, sludge, scale as well as organic matters are mixed together, are considered to be with much higher risk.
