Every hairstylist remember the moment they became attracted to hair along with the love for creativity who’s inspires. The tale wasn’t any different for U.S. Marine Corps veteran Kristyl Rodrigues who discovered her passion for hair while enrolled at Bellus Academy’s school of cosmetology in Poway, California. There Kristyl was studying cosmetology and pursuing a professional beauty education. In her own story, there’s a valuable message that can be shared. “It doesn’t matter in places you begin or how we begin. I wish to be capable of spark that passion into people where we’re making this industry 10 times better, we’re studying under our background we’re continuing that legacy,” shared Kristyl. This is her story.
The start: Inspiration Can Strike Anywhere
Kristyl joined the Marine Corps in 2014 and it was enlisted on the age of 19. Her first duty station was in Okinawa, Japan, then an industry operation in Korea. Weekly during Kristyl’s period in Korea, a barber would check out the site and provide haircuts on the Marines. Then again, this happened: “I was at a tent doing my personal hair,” shares Kristyl. “I would certainly do shape ups and line ups for myself, nothing too crazy, when I stood a Marine Sergeant approach me and have me for any haircut. I had created never cut anybody’s hair before however i jumped strait into it and he ended up loving it…and together with his outreach and leadership, literally in the morning, I had 13 Marines prearranged to me.”
This is the first moment that Kristyl considered barbering as being a future career-she settled on charging $5 a haircut and that was it. Using a strong intrinsic motivation and entrepreneurial spirit, she worked overnight shifts on guard duty from 12a.m. to 8a.m., then cut hair throughout the days. What Kristyl learned was profound: Hairdressers touch more hearts than heads and every time you service a customer, there’s impact.
The outcome of an Haircut
“As a Marine, the factors for appearance are in an all-time high. The uniform needs to be squared away and ironed. Everything needs to be flush, measured properly-there’s a lot of focus on detail,” shares Kristyl. “I was investigating Marines from top. It tore up my heart because we’re the best possible people with this nation and that we need to be walking on therefore. That’s where the impact over the internet and heart originated from, i thought about being capable to transmit that through my hands to the people around me…and have them walk around feeling proud and good from top to bottom, and representing this nation consequently.”
Similarities In Service: Military & Barbering
After coming back from service, Kristyl asked herself just what the next challenge and chapter in her life will be. That’s when she decided to pursue her education being a barber at Bellus Academy. Gaining knowledge from her own history and anticipating, she found many similarities in their service and in the role of a barber.
